ANCIENT VASE

The ancient vase is one of the most recognizable and important objects of ancient Greek art. Often made of clay, these jars served not only to store liquids, such as oil and wine, but also as decorative objects. The art of pottery developed significantly during the Greek era, with vases often bearing intricate designs and scenes from mythology, everyday life and festivals.

There are several types of ancient jars, such as amphorae, kraters, ring jars, and so-called “classical” pitchers. Each type has its own use and morphological characteristics. Vase painting can be divided into two main periods: the “Red Figure” and the “Black Figure”. In the red pattern, the designs are painted on a red background, while in the black pattern, the details are painted in white or red on a black background.
