Greeks were the first to cultivate the olive tree in about 2500 BC and during the Minoan Era olive oil served as the foundation of the ancient Cretan economy. In modern times, medical research has found much evidence that olive oil consumption is highly beneficial for human health and is well worth a place in our daily diet. The best olive oil type is extra virgin olive oil. It is extracted using natural methods and standardized for purity and certain sensory qualities like taste and smell. Olive oil that is truly extra virgin has a distinctive taste and is high in phenolic antioxidants, the main reason why (real) olive oil is so beneficial. For this reason, the only type I recommend is extra virgin olive oil.
